Sculptra is an injectable dermal filler that has been available since 1999. It was first FDA-approved in 2004 to treat Lipoatrophy in individuals living with HIV, a condition causing facial fat loss leading to sunken cheeks and deep folds and indentations on the face.

In 2014, the FDA approved Sculptra Aesthetic for treating wrinkles and folds on the face to provide a more youthful appearance.

The main ingredient in Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), classified as a collagen stimulator that delivers long-lasting, natural-looking results lasting up to two years. Sculptra is considered safe and effective, although it is not recommended for individuals with allergies to any of its ingredients or those with medical conditions causing irregular scarring.

Collagen is a fibrous protein essential for maintaining your skin’s shape and structure. It plays a crucial role in resisting signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging. By age 40, most of us have lost up to 20% of our natural collagen.

Sculptra stimulates natural collagen production. The poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA-SCA) in Sculptra forms a framework that supports and maintains the skin’s inner structure, potentially leading to a more youthful appearance.

When a synthetic collagen stimulator is injected under the skin, white blood cells are encouraged to surround the poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). This triggers the release of TGF-beta and PDGF in the area, stimulating new collagen production. PLLA is slowly and naturally broken down, continuing to revitalize Type-1 collagen stores and restore skin volume. By addressing the underlying cause of skin aging, Sculptra leads to a dramatic yet natural improvement in skin texture. Unlike other procedures that stimulate collagen production, Sculptra’s effectiveness lies in its specific targeting of Type-1 collagen, the most abundant type found in the body, present in skin and tendons.

Sculptra has the ability to dissipate on its own. Does not remain in the body Therefore, it is used to produce dissolving sutures and bone fixation plates which are also medical devices. This ensures that when Sculptra is injected, it will not leave any residue in the body.

PLLA should not be used in these areas:

  • Subdermal such as eyelid/crow’s feet
  • Hyperdynamic areas such as depressor anguli oris muscle, commissures, perioral area including upper lip perioral lines and periorbital area
  • Red of the lips
  • Front headlines and vermillion border of the lip to avoid nodularity irregular collagen formation
  • Nose

Side effects that may occur after injecting SCULPTRA will have symptoms similar to filler injections, such as redness, bruising, and swelling. Press with your finger and feel numbness and pain at the injection site. Most will go away after applying a cold compress within a few hours or 2-3 days after the injection. Some patients whose skin bruises easily may experience symptoms for up to 2 weeks.

Approximately 5 days after the Sculptra injection, the collagen production process begins. Facial skin will gradually improve within 2-3 weeks before you will start to see changes. Wrinkles will gradually decrease and facial skin will be brighter and more radiant. And after 3 months you will see more clear results. You will notice that your face will be firm, full, hydrated and look younger.
Sculptra injections are recommended for 2-3 consecutive injections at first to adjust the skin condition. It will help the skin create collagen fully. The results will then last up to 2 years in the case of a single injection. Results will last approximately 6-7 months.
